[2025-05] Gwanghye(19)'s Parent

Gwanghye finished his elementary and middle school studies through the GED system in Korea. After graduating high school and thinking about his future path, he was recommended to join the Canada Homestay program. He decided to go together with his long-time homeschool friend, Hannah P., and another student, Hyena(Hannah K.).

We hoped that by joining the program, his fear of English would lessen and that he would be able to speak a little more freely. But honestly, as his parents, we were worried too. At 19 years old (born in 2006), he still complained a lot and acted a bit childish, so we wondered, “Will he be able to adapt well in Canada?” Thankfully, the way Canadians saw his active and outgoing personality was very different from Korea. People around him reacted positively, and this gave him a lot of confidence.

When he left Incheon Airport, he was full of excitement and courage. But once he arrived at Calgary Airport, he looked nervous in the new environment, surrounded by a family speaking a different language. Thankfully, Julian and Catherine and their four children (two sons and two daughters) welcomed him warmly, and on the very first day they shared pizza and conversation together. That was how his life in Calgary began.

Because summer in Canada is short, families make the most of the season with trips, camps, festivals, and many activities. The Catherine family, with their teenage children, was especially active. Gwanghye regularly played soccer at a local club with their eldest son, sometimes went to the YMCA to workout, studied English with Catherine in the mornings, and attended church every Sunday. The worship there was freer and more open than in Korea, and it was a new experience for him.

During vacation, the family took him to Banff for the first time. They admired the beautiful, majestic scenery together, and he even had the rare chance to see a grizzly bear along the way. After that, Banff became a very special place for him. He went back two more times — once hiking with his Chinese friend, and another time with the program coordinator and other Korean students.

There were many other memorable experiences too: visiting other homeschool families, exploring downtown Calgary, celebrating Canada Day (July 1), swimming in a lake in Kananaskis, attending the Calgary Stampede, joining River Edge Camp (with Bible study, worship, prayer, and activities), and meeting homeschool friends in Okotoks. With so many things happening, the 12 weeks passed quickly, and in the end, he even said he wanted to come back again.

His time in Calgary gave him much more than just English practice. He experienced Canada’s nature, culture, and new friendships — people who may look different but share the same faith in God. At home, he was the youngest child, but in the homestay family, he looked after younger kids too. Through this, he grew into a more caring and thoughtful person. We believe this trip helped him not only improve his English but also open his heart, broaden his vision, and learn to look further ahead in life with peace and confidence.

We pray that the good experiences he had in Canada will continue to shape his life in Korea, so that he will grow into a man who embraces others with a heart as wide and beautiful as Banff’s nature.

We are thankful to Jesus for guiding this entire journey. We also deeply appreciate the program coordinator Kim, the host family Julian and Catherine, and everyone who prayed for and supported our son with care.

광혜는 초.중학교 과정까지 검정고시로 과정을 마치고 처음 고등학교를 갔고 졸업 후 진로를 고민하던 중 캐나다 홈스테이를 추천받고 어려서부터 함께 홈스쿨하던 친구 해나와 또 다른 동생 혜나와 함께 캐나다를 방문하게 되었습니다.

영어에 대한 거부감이 줄고 조금이나마 말 할 수 있으면 하는 마음으로 결정했지만 19세의(2006년생) 아들의 투덜대고 어린애 같은 모습에 캐나다가서 잘 적응할 수 있을까?라는 걱정이 앞서기도 했습니다. 그러나 아들의 활동적이고 적극적인 모습은 한국과 다르게 캐나다에서는 긍정적으로 바라보는 주변분들의 태도에 광혜가 자신감을 많이 얻었던 것 같습니다.

처음 인천공항을 떠날 때 기대와 자신감으로 떠났지만 막상 캘거리 공항에 도착한 아들은 언어가 다른 새롭고 낯선 환경과 가족들에게 긴장한 듯 보였습니다. 그러나 이내 아들 특유의 친화력과 함께 편안게 맞이해준 줄리안과 캐서린 부부와 아이들(두 아들, 두 딸들) 덕분에 첫 날은 함께 피자를 먹으며 대화를 나누면서 캘거리 생활을 시작하게 되었습니다.

캐나다의 여름은 짧기에 이 시기에 사람들은 가족과 함께 휴가를 즐기는데 이 기간 동안에는 여행, 캠프, 축제, 등 많은 행사와 활동이 이루어졌습니다.

특히 캐서린 가정은 10대 자녀들이 있는 가정이기에 좀 더 액티비티한 프로그램을 많이 했는데 정규적으로 첫째 아들인 캐일럽과 축구 클럽에서 축구를 했으며 가끔 YMCA 시설도 이용하며 체력을 다졌고 특별한 일정이 없는 오전에는 캐서린과 영어공부를 틈틈히 했으며 주일에는 교회에 가서 한국과는 다르게 자유로운 분위기에서 찬양하며 예배드렸습니다.

휴가때는 홈스테이 가족과 처음 벤프를 방문하여 아름답고 웅장한 자연경관을 보며 감탄하기도 하며 가는 중 그 곳에서도 잘 볼 수 없는 곰(글리즐리 베어)을 보는 특별한 시간도 갖었습니다. 그 후에도 광혜는 밴프를 첸이라는 중국 친구와 하이킹으로 한 번, 코디님과 한국 친구들과 한 번 총 3번이나 더 갔다왔기에 더욱 특별한 곳으로 여깁니다.

그 밖에도 다른 홈스쿨 가정 방문, 갤거리 다운타운 방문, 캐나다 데이 (7/1캐나다 건국일), 카나나스키스에 있는 호수 방문, 캘거리 스템피드(캘거리 축제) , River Edge Camp(성경공부 예배 묵상. 기도모임 액티비티 ), 오코톡스에서 홈스쿨하는 친구들 만남 등 많은 활동을 하며 지내나보니 어느덧 12주간의 시간이 빠르게 지나갔습니다. 아쉬운지 다시 방문하겠다고 하더군요.

광혜의 캐나다 캘거리에서의 12주간의 경험은 캐나다의 자연, 문화, 그리고 외모와 환경은 다르지만 주님을 향한 믿음의 친구들과 교류하며 많은 것을 느끼고 생각하게 했으며 무엇보다 집에서는 막내인 광혜가 홈스테이 가정의 동생들을 나름 챙기고 생각하는 모습 등을 보며 이번 캐나다 방문으로 영어 향상을 넘어 세상을 향한 마음과 시야가 좀 더 넓어지고 멀리 바라보며 여유를 갖게 된 것 같아 의미있고 감사한 시간이었습니다.

캐나다에서의 좋은 경험이 한국에서의 삶까지 이어져 밴프의 자연처럼 넓고 아름다운 주님의 마음으로 사람들을 품고 성장하는 아들이 되기를 기도합니다.
