I spent three months in Canada for a homestay program. Before going to Canada, I was worried because I might not be able to attend middle school due to attendance requirements. However, I thought that once I entered middle school, I wouldn't have time for this kind of experience, so if not now, I might never get this chance. Despite my concerns, I really wanted to go to Canada for the homestay. Looking back now, I feel that it was the right decision.

In Korea, I lived in a city with many buildings and apartments, so I was always surrounded by tall structures. However, where I stayed in Canada, there were almost no buildings or apartments. Most homes were single-family houses, and there were many trees and lawns around. When I walked down the street, there were no tall buildings blocking my view, so the sky looked much wider. I often saw children playing outside and people walking around, which felt very different from Korea.

When winter came, it snowed a lot. It was amazing and beautiful to see snow piled up on the roads in front of the house and on the trees. There was an outdoor ice rink near my house, so I could go there often, which was great. I love ice skating, but it was hard to do it frequently in Korea. In Canada, it was close to home, so I could go whenever I had time, and skating outdoors made it even more fun.

I also remember sledding down a tall, snowy hill. I went sledding with my friend Slone and her younger brother Ellis. It was a bit scary at first, but it became more and more fun. Through these experiences, I was able to truly feel what winter in Canada was like.

Canada's Christmas culture also left a strong impression on me. There were lights and decorations on every house and street, which made the neighborhood feel bright and warm. I also went to Youth Group at church every Thursday. It was a place where middle and high school students gathered to hear God's word and play games. I wasn't usually interested in this kind of activity, but when I actually went, it was more fun than I expected.

The time I spent with my homestay family is also very memorable. With five children, the house was always lively and noisy. The oldest, Micah, was a senior in high school and was almost always studying. The second, Mateo, was a prankster, so we spent more time joking around than having conversations. I enjoyed chatting with the twins, Presley and Arden, while coloring together. The youngest, Bennett, was six years old and loved playing board games with me, so we often played games or did crafts together. The family was very kind, and they always helped me when I struggled with English.

The hardest part was missing my family and friends. However, going through that time taught me how to adapt on my own. After the homestay in Canada, English became much easier for me, and I felt less nervous talking to foreigners. Although there were times when I worried about attendance, I think I gained far more experiences than I lost.

For these reasons, I recommend the Canada homestay program. I was able to have various experiences while living in a new environment, and I felt that I grew a little as a person. If there's an opportunity, I think other students should try a Canada homestay at least once.

저는 3개월 동안 캐나다로 홈스테이를 다녀왔습니다. 캐나다에 가기 전에는 출석 일수 때문에 중학교에 진학하지 못할 수도 있어서 많이 고민했습니다. 그래도 중학교에 들어가면 시간이 없을 것 같아서, 지금이 아니면 이런 경험을 못 할 것 같다고 생각했습니다. 그래서 걱정이 되었지만 캐나다 홈스테이에 꼭 가고 싶었습니다. 지금 생각해 보면 그때의 선택은 잘한 선택이었다고 느낍니다.

저는 한국에서 빌딩과 아파트가 많은 도시에서 살았습니다. 그래서 늘 높은 건물들만 보며 지냈습니다. 하지만 캐나다에서 지낸 곳에는 빌딩이나 아파트가 거의 없었습니다. 대부분 단독주택이었고, 집 주변에는 나무와 잔디가 많았습니다. 길을 걸으면 시야를 가리는 건물이 없어서 하늘이 훨씬 넓게 보였습니다. 아이들이 밖에서 뛰어놀고 사람들이 오가는 모습도 자주 보여서 한국과는 다른 분위기라고 느꼈습니다.

겨울이 되자 눈이 정말 많이 내렸습니다. 집 앞 도로와 나무 위에 눈이 쌓인 모습을 보는 것이 신기했고 예뻤습니다. 집에서 가까운 곳에 야외 아이스 링크장이 있어서 자주 갈 수 있었던 것도 좋았습니다. 저는 아이스 스케이트를 좋아하지만 한국에서는 자주 타기 어려웠습니다. 캐나다에서는 집과 가까워서 시간 날 때마다 갈 수 있었고, 밖에서 스케이트를 타는 느낌이라 더 재미있었습니다.

또 눈이 많이 쌓인 높은 산에서 썰매를 탔던 경험도 기억에 남습니다. Slone이라는 친구와 그 친구의 남동생 Ellis와 함께 썰매를 탔는데, 처음에는 조금 무서웠지만 점점 재미있어졌습니다. 이런 경험을 하면서 캐나다의 겨울을 제대로 느낄 수 있었습니다.

캐나다의 크리스마스 문화도 인상 깊었습니다. 집과 거리마다 불빛 장식이 많아서 동네 분위기가 밝고 따뜻하게 느껴졌습니다. 그리고 교회에서 목요일마다 youth group이라는 곳에 갔습니다. 중고등학생들이 모여 하나님 말씀을 듣고 게임도 하는 곳이었는데, 원래는 이런 활동을 좋아하지 않았지만 직접 가 보니 생각보다 재미있었습니다.

홈스테이 가족과 지낸 시간도 기억에 많이 남습니다. 아이가 다섯 명이라 집이 항상 시끌벅적했습니다. 첫째 Micah는 고등학교 3학년으로 거의 항상 공부만 하고 있었습니다. 둘째 Mateo는 장난꾸러기라서 이야기를 하기보다는 장난을 치며 지내는 일이 많았습니다. 쌍둥이인 Presley와 Arden과는 컬러링을 하면서 수다를 떠는 시간이 즐거웠습니다. 막내 Bennett는 6살로 저와 보드게임을 하는 것을 좋아해서 보드게임이나 만들기를 하며 자주 놀았습니다. 가족들은 모두 착했고, 제가 영어를 어려워할 때마다 도와주었습니다.

힘들었던 점은 가족과 친구들이 보고 싶었던 것이었습니다. 그래도 그 시간을 보내면서 혼자서도 적응하는 법을 배울 수 있었습니다. 캐나다 홈스테이를 다녀온 후에는 영어가 훨씬 편해졌고, 외국인과 대화하는 것도 전보다 덜 긴장하게 되었습니다. 출석 때문에 걱정했던 시간도 있었지만, 그보다 더 많은 경험을 했다고 생각합니다.

이러한 이유로 저는 캐나다 홈스테이를 추천합니다. 새로운 환경에서 생활하며 다양한 경험을 할 수 있었고, 제 자신이 조금 더 성장했다고 느꼈기 때문입니다. 기회가 있다면 다른 친구들도 캐나다 홈스테이를 한 번쯤 경험해 보면 좋겠다고 생각합니다.
