저희는 국제 교류 프로그램을 전혀 해본 적이 없었기에 이번 참여는 사실 새로운 경험이었습니다. 학생이 도착할 때 조금 긴장되면서도 기대가 되었습니다. 저희 아이들은 사람을 좋아해서 아이들이 그 학생을 따뜻하게 맞이할 거라고 확신했지만, 아무래도 집에 낯선 사람이 들어오는 것이고 또 영어를 못하니까, 그 과정에 대해서는 확신이 없었습니다.

준이가 도착했을 때, 그는 영어를 거의 못했어요. 하지만 아이들은 준이를 아주 빨리 받아들였습니다. 처음 두 주는 적응 시간이 필요할 거라는 이야기를 들었지만, 아마 일주일 정도 지난 후 금방 적응하고 모든 것을 잘 해결할 수 있었던 것 같습니다. 또 언어 장벽을 극복하며 소통하는 과정에서 많은 웃음이 있었어요.

준이가 저희 집에 온 것은 정말 축복이었습니다. 준이는 항상 모든 활동에 적극적으로 참여하고자 했고, 우리 아이들에게 매우 친절하고 인내심을 가지고 대해주었으며, 집에서도 매우 예의 바르게 행동했습니다. 그래서 그런 부분은 전혀 문제가 되지 않았습니다. 오히려 저는 준이에게 혼자 있고 싶을 때는 아이들에게 말하라고 항상 이야기했습니다. 아이들이 계속 준이와 놀고 싶어했거든요. 정말 축복 받은 멋진 경험이었습니다.

우리 가족 모두가 진심으로 준이가 떠나는 것을 매우 아쉬워하고 있습니다. 준이가 여기 없다는 것에 큰 적응이 필요할 것 같습니다. 이미 제 아이들 중 몇 명은 준이가 돌아간다는 생각에 슬퍼했습니다. 준이는 정말 저희 가족의 일원이 되었어요. 정말, 정말 좋은 경험이었습니다. 준이의 영어가 향상되는 것을 보는 것도 너무 기뻤고, 또한 마치 네 번째 아이가 생긴 것처럼, 함께 다양한 활동을 경험할 수 있어서 좋았어요. 캐나다를 보여주고, 함께 활동을 즐기고.집에서도 준이는 진짜로 많은 도움을 주었습니다. 저희 큰 아들과 나이가 같아서, 도움이 필요할 때 13, 14살 아이 두 명에게 도움을 받을 수 있다는 것이 정말 좋았습니다.

코디네이터 두 분은 정말 매우 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 저는 의문이 생기거나 불확실한 상황이 생길 때마다 계속 질문을 했었습니다. 몇 번은 제가 어떻게 해야 할지 모르겠던 적이 있었는데, 현수 코디네이터는 정말 신속하게 답변을 해주고, 상황을 어떻게 처리할지에 대해 아주 좋은 조언도 해줬습니다. 진심으로 하나도 불만이 없을 정도로 감사합니다. 서포트를 너무 잘해주셨습니다. 주기적으로 방문하여 관리를 하는 것이 정말, 정말 좋았습니다. 또, 모든 상황을 잘 체크해주었습니다.

또한, 학생들에게도 친숙하게 대해주어 적응하는데 도움을 주었습니다. 특히 언어 장벽이 있는 초기에는 학생들과 한국어로 대화하면서 조금 더 적응하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있는 누군가가 있다는 것이 정말 좋았습니다. 그리고 학생들의 적응을 돕기 위해 무엇을 해야 하는지, 그리고 학생과 그들의 영어 향상을 위해서 때로는 단호하게 지켜야 할 규칙들도 잘 설명해주었습니다.

My name is Sue Music and we participated in the home school homestay program for the first time this past November until February, the 12 weeks.

We had never done any international exchange type program at all. So it's kind of a new territory for us. We were nervously excited to have a student arrive. Our children love people, so we were confident that they would be welcomed with open arms, but obviously it's a stranger in your home and they don't speak English, so we weren't unsure about that process.

When Junyi arrived, he did not speak much English at all. But the kids took to him very quickly, and as we were expected, it was shared with us at the first two weeks would be an adjustment, which it was. But it probably only took a week for us to really adjust and figure things out. And I would say that there was a lot of humor in figuring out the language barrier and communicating that.

We were very blessed with our student. He was willing to participate in everything all the time. He was so kind and patient with our children, very respectful in our home. So none of those things were ever a challenge. If anything, I was always, like my own kids, telling the student you have to tell them when you want space because they wanted to play with him all the time. It was such a blessed, amazing experience.

Honestly, everybody is very sad to see Junyi leave. I think it will be a big adjustment for us to not have him here. I already know some of my kids are feeling sad that he's going to be gone, so he has really become part of our family. It has just been a really, really great experience. It's been awesome to watch his English progress. It's been great to have like a fourth child along with us to experience the things. We've loved showing him Canada, the activities. And he's been a great help, to be honest, in the home too. Being that he was the same age as my eldest. So I would have two 13 or 14 year old hands to help me when needed, and it's been great.

I would say that they have been extremely helpful. I was not shy about asking questions or uncertainties. We did encounter a couple of situations where I did not know what to do or how to handle it. And Hyunsu was like so responsive, gave really good advice as far as how to approach a situation. I was very pleased and honestly have nothing bad to say. I think the level of support is really great. The fact that they touch base and come into your home every couple of weeks I thought, was really, really great. And they stayed on top of things.

And then there's a little bit of familiarity too for our student, I think it really helped our student warm up to our family too because of the language barrier. Especially early on you had someone could speak Korean with them and help them adapt a little bit more and helped us all adjust to like what we should do and where to have boundaries and kind of staying firm just for the benefit of the student and progressing their English.
