[2024-11] Hanna (16)

My Survival Journey in Canada

Hello, I'm Hanna Cho, someone who loves English.

I was homeschooled until I finished Grade 1. Due to my mother's serious health condition, I started attending school from Grade 2 onwards. At first, I was really unsure about going on a homestay in Canada. I was worried about missing school in the middle of Grade 9, but then I thought, "Under God's guidance, what do I have to worry about?" I also love speaking English, which is why I decided to take the step and go for the Canadian homestay.

When I first met my host family upon arriving in Canada, it was a bit awkward, but everyone was so friendly and playful, which made it much easier for me to adjust. With the thought, "It’ll be fine somehow!" my survival journey in Canada began.

As time passed, I naturally adapted to my host family life. I was especially impressed by the opportunity to experience the family's rules and culture first-hand. I tutored one-on-one with Teresa, studied, helped with household chores, baked cookies, played games, and had a special "girls' night" with the family. I also experienced MuayThai, ice skating, a baby shower, sausage BBQ, activities, and even attended a ringette game. I participated in nail art, Christmas choir, and helped care for the puppies born in the family. On Christmas, we had a traditional turkey dinner with my grandparents, and the whole family spent quality time together. We also exchanged gifts, creating a warm and special Christmas.

Through daily use of English, I realized something. There are so many expressions in our language that are difficult to translate directly into English. Every time that happened, I thought about how beautiful and precious our language is.

I felt that the messages I heard at church were really special. The sermons from the pastors were so engaging that they left a deep impression on me. Listening to the sermon in English resonated with me more, and I really enjoyed it. My mom says that 80% of my ability to speak English is thanks to homeschooling, but I believe it's more like 90%. Of course, through this homestay in Canada, my English skills have naturally improved. Over the 12 weeks, there was no way I couldn't have grown!

Looking back on everything, I realize it was such a precious and meaningful experience. I’m so thankful to the program director for giving me this opportunity. I also deeply appreciate the coordinators who were always there for me.

Lastly, I thank my beloved parents and God.
