Many experts say that the best thing we can do for our children’s education is “travel.” But the reality is, frequent travel is not easy, and traveling abroad is even harder. That’s why reading is considered the next best way to give our children indirect experiences.

The reason travel and books are more valuable than studying, tutoring, or academy classes is because they help a child build a larger “inner vessel.” When that vessel grows, they can hold more, understand more, and eventually become wiser and more grounded individuals. The difference in experiences eventually becomes the difference in knowledge, character, and maturity.

It is often said that Korean students who study abroad start out very strong—creative and confident. But over time, many struggle to keep growing. Experts say this is because children in Korea often grow up in a uniform environment with limited diversity.

Leaving daily life behind and stepping into a completely new world—reflecting on themselves, gaining new perspectives, and experiencing things they could never do at home—these are priceless opportunities that money cannot buy. A different family, a different environment, different studies, different daily routines…All these elements become lifelong assets that help a child grow differently from others. For this reason, we decided to send our child to Canada Homeschool Homestay Program.

What worried me most was that neither the director, the host family, nor the coordinator were people we had known beforehand. Because there was no official guarantee for my child’s safety or protection, I naturally had concerns. But I was reminded that even traditional study-abroad programs cannot offer absolute guarantees. So, with prayer and trust that God would protect our child, we finally gathered the courage to apply. In raising a child, I believe faith is ultimately the most important foundation.

We had also seen advertisements for homestay programs in the Philippines, but the cost was almost the same as this program. And the style was different—mostly group activities, not a true family-based homestay like this one.

Thankfully, my child was curious and willingly agreed to try the Canadian homestay. Since she is currently in high school, her attendance record was a concern. Even so, hoping for a different tomorrow, she bravely chose to go. (She currently has about 20 days of unexcused absences.)

While staying with the host family, she participated in many activities and had countless opportunities to interact with local people. The host mom taught her thoroughly every day, and although my daughter’s English level was around elementary school at first, her listening skills improved rapidly. Within two months, she was even able to watch local TV and understand it.

The coordinator was another source of deep gratitude. He understood my child’s personality so well and guided her with such care and attention to detail. Honestly, since kindergarten, we had never met a teacher who understood and supported her this deeply. For that, I am truly thankful.

Each child in the program had slightly different experiences depending on the family, their personality, and even the season. What mattered most was that one child stayed with one family and spent far more time with local people than with Koreans. She wasn’t just studying. She joined family events, met relatives, went on outings, did sports activities, shopped, attended church, joined church retreats, and participated in many meaningful experiences.

My daughter said her host mom loved her like her own child. Hearing that was one of the most touching and grateful moments for me.

She returned home full of motivation to study English properly. She is already planning to attend the church retreat again next year and wants to study even harder so she can participate with stronger English skills.

After experiencing it firsthand, I can confidently say that this program is truly exceptional—unlike anything else we’ve seen. Where else can you find a homestay run by families who genuinely care for the children with faith and sincerity, rather than simply offering a place to sleep for money? In many other programs, similar fees only provide group housing or separated study locations.

But here, the host families did not do this for money. They truly poured out their hearts to help the children adjust, study, and grow. My daughter completed an entire book she had committed to studying, and she said she had never studied so diligently before. Thanks to the host mom’s dedication, she spent her entire break studying on her own—something she had never done in Korea.

Considering everything my daughter received, the cost was truly not expensive. And the experience was incredibly rich — attending church every Sunday, joining events, retreats, community activities, volunteer work, and sightseeing, including the coordinator’s constant support.

My daughter learned things that cannot be found by searching online in Korea. Knowing she was doing so well—sometimes even better than at home—gave me tremendous peace of mind.

I am deeply grateful to everyone who prepared and supported this program. I truly feel that this was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made for our child. She gained new perspectives, new hope, and a new sense of direction at a time when she felt stuck. This precious experience will undoubtedly become a major asset in her life.

If the goal were only English, going at a younger age might have been more effective. But going as a second-year high school student—somewhat “late”—actually allowed her to appreciate and absorb the experience on a deeper level. In many ways, the timing could not have been better.

아이들을 교육하는데 있어 가장 좋은 것은 '여행' 이라고 전문가들은 말합니다. 

하지만 여행을 많이 다니기는 힘들고 해외를 많이 다니기는 더 힘들기 때문에 간접 경험으로 독서를 그 다음 좋은 것으로 칩니다. 

공부나 과외나 학원이 아니라 여행과 책이 가장 좋은 교육법인 이유는, 사람은 그 바탕이 커지고 많은 것을 담고 다룰 수 있는 그릇을 크게 키우는 것이 가장 중요하기 때문입니다. 경험의 차이가 그릇의 차이 그리고 지식과 인격의 차이까지 만들기 때문입니다. 

해외에 유학을 간 우리 나라 아이들은, 초반에는 매우 창의적이고 잘 한다고 합니다. 그런데 시간이 갈수록 그 이상의 것을 보여주지 못하고 주저앉는 경우가 많다고 합니다. 우리나라 아이들의 성장환경은 획일적이고, 다양성보다는 정형화 되있는 경우가 많아서 그렇다고 합니다. 

일상을 떠나 완전히 새로운 환경에서 자신을 돌아보고 세상을 보는 눈을 넓히는 것과, 여기서는 할 수 없는 다른 경험을 하는 것은 돈을 주고도 살 수 없는 가치 있는 것이라 생각합니다. 다른 가족, 다른 환경, 다른 공부, 다른 경험.. 이 모든 것들이 다른 아이와 다르게 클 수 있는 자산이 될 수 있는 것이기 때문에 과감하게 캐나다 홈스테이를 결정했습니다.

가장 걱정했던 것은 일면식도 없는 운영진님과 홈스테이 현지 가정, 그리고 코디님에 대한 기존 라포나 관계가 없었던 점이었습니다. 아이의 안전이나 보호에 대해 그 어떤 문서화된 보장, 보증된 보장이 없다 느꼈기 때문에 걱정을 했습니다만, 유학을 가도 그런 보장은 없다는 말씀에 용기를 내어 신청을 하게 되었습니다. 하나님께서 보호해주실 거라는 믿음이 가장 필요한 것이었습니다. 아이를 양육하는데에 무엇보다 가장 중요한 것이 아닐까 합니다. 

또한 필리핀 홈스테이 광고도 보았는데 금액이 캐나다 홈스테이와 거의 차이가 없었습니다. 거기다 홈스테이 방식도 달랐습니다. 그곳은 단체활동이 주이고, 여기 홈스테이처럼 완전 현지 가정 경험도 아니었습니다. 

아이는 다행히 호기심을 가지고 캐나다 홈스테이에 동의하였습니다. 특히 고등학교를 다니고 있는 상태여서 출석 일수가 문제가 되었습니다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 오늘과는 다른 내일을 기대하며 과감히 다녀오게 되었습니다.(현재 20일정도 미인정 결석이 된 상태입니다.)

아이는 현지 가정에 적응하며 많은 활동을 함께 하며 현지인들과 함께하는 경험을 많이 쌓을 수 있었습니다. 홈스테이 가정의 어머니는 수업을 철저하게 해주었고, 초등학교 정도의 실력이었던 아이는 듣기 능력부터 급격하게 향상되더니 두 달이 안되어 현지 TV를 함께 보며 이해하는 정도가 되었습니다. 

코디선생님은 또 하나의 감동이었습니다. 

아이의 성향을 파악하고 깊게 이해해주었을 뿐 아니라 디테일하게 코칭을 해주시고, 실질적인 많은 도움을 주셨습니다. 유치원 선생님 이후로 아이를 이토록 잘 파악해주시고 신경 써주신 선생님이 없었다고 생각합니다. 그 점에 정말 깊이 감사드립니다. 

현지에서는 각 가정의 상황과 아이의 성향, 그리고 계절 등의 이유로 조금씩 경험하는 것이나 겪는 일들이 달랐습니다. 중요한 것은 한 가정에 한 아이가 가서 한국인보다는 현지인들과 절대적으로 많은 시간을 보내고 공부 뿐 아니라 가족 행사, 친척 만나기, 놀러가기, 체육활동, 쇼핑, 교회, 교회행사 및 수련회 등 정말 많은 경험들을 했다는 것입니다. 

특히 아이는 현지 가정 어머니가 정말 부모님처럼, 자기를 정말 딸처럼 사랑해주었다고 말하였습니다. 정말 감동적이고 감사한 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 

아이는 이제 영어공부를 진심으로 제대로 하고 싶은 마음을 가득 안고 돌아왔습니다. 내년에도 또 캐나다 교회 연합수련회에 참석하고 싶어서 벌써 계획을 세우고 있습니다. 더 나은 영어실력으로 다녀오기 위해 영어공부도 열심히 하려고 합니다. 

경험해보니, 정말 이 프로그램은 다른 곳과 비교 불가일 정도로 좋은 프로그램입니다. 

다른 곳도 이렇게 믿음과 신앙을 가지고 아이들을 받아주고 공부까지 시켜주는 현지 가정으로 운영되는 홈스테이 프로그램이 있나요? 하숙집같이 잠잘 곳만 제공하는 홈스테이가 대부분인 것으로 압니다. 캐나다의 가정들은 돈을 벌기 위해서 이 일을 하시는 것도 아니고 하숙집같이 잠잘 곳만 제공하는 것도 아니었습니다. 정말 사랑과 정성으로 아이들이 적응할 수 있도록 도와주셨고 집이나 다니는 교회가 아닌 다른 곳에서 그런 경험을 하기는 쉽지 않을 것입니다. 공부도 얼마나 열심히 시켜주셨는지, 아이는 공부하기로 한 책 한 권을 다 하고 돌아왔고 한국에서는 시험 때만 하던 공부를 가르쳐주시는 어머니 정성에 힘입어 방학내내 스스로 열심히 하였고 이렇게 열심히 공부한 적이 없었다고 말했을 정도였습니다. 

아이가 누리는 것에 비해 비용이 그만큼 더 비싼 것도 아니었습니다. 다른 홈스테이 프로그램은 비슷한 비용에 한국인들을 모아 단체 합숙을 시키거나 홈스테이 가정 따로 공부하는 곳 따로인 프로그램이 대부분인 것으로 압니다. 

코디 선생님은 물심양면 아이들을 위해 소통해 주셨고, 주일이면 현지 교회에 함께 가고 교회행사 및 수련회, 지역행사, 봉사활동, 주변 관광... 정말 많은 경험을 하고 올 수 있었습니다. 

한국에서는 검색을 해도 나오지 않는 내용들을 아이는 배웠다며 여러가지 이야기를 하였습니다. 

그곳에 있는 동안 만은 아이가 잘 지내는지 걱정하지 않아도 될 정도로 집에서 보다 더 잘 지내는 모습에 안심할 수 있었습니다. 

정말 이런 프로그램을 준비해주신 운영자님과 프로그램 종사자분들께 말로 다 할 수 없는 감사를 드립니다. 아이에게 해준 것 중 가장 좋은 것 중 하나가 아니었나 합니다. 아이는 길이 보이지 않던 현실 속에서 새로운 경험을 하고 새로운 돌파구와 새로운 안목이 자랐습니다. 이번의 값진 경험은 아이에게 분명히 큰 자산이 될 것이라고 생각합니다. 

단지 영어만 생각한다면 더 어릴 때 가는 것이 더 효과적이겠으나, 고등학교 2학년이라는 조금은 늦은(?) 나이에 간 것도 아이의 경험치의 폭과 깊이를 생각할 때 더욱 좋았던 점도 있었다고 생각합니다.
