[2025-05] Haeum's(17) Parent

Although our daughter was the oldest among the students in this session, sending a child alone to another country felt like an adventure for us—and, to be honest, it came with many worries. Nevertheless, she completed the 12-week homestay without so much as a scratch or a single painful incident and returned home safely. We are deeply grateful to God, who held and guided her from departure to return.

Before she left, we prayed a small prayer that she might see the northern lights. God answered that prayer: she was blessed to witness the aurora—something even locals rarely see. We had been hoping for the aurora, and it felt so striking to discover that the host mother’s name was “Laura.” We also failed to mention in advance that our daughter might be sensitive to dog hair, but later learned that the family’s dog was a breed developed for people with allergies. Even in such small details, we could not help but sense God’s careful guidance.

Just from the photos sent beforehand, we could tell that Laura’s family was warm and close-knit. We were deeply grateful and moved by their generous welcome for a child from overseas. The fact that they prepared chopsticks and looked up information about Korean food is something that will stay with us for a long time. At times the host father read aloud from the original English text of The Lord of the Rings, which was also a very meaningful experience for our daughter.

As our daughter travelled with the family, laughed and enjoyed outings together, and attended the church youth group, her English grew naturally. At first, her thoughts came in Korean and she translated in her head before speaking; now that step is gone—English comes to mind first and the words come out immediately. A major shift in listening was that, at a certain point, she found she could understand conversations even when she wasn’t a participant, simply overhearing others talk. We even heard that she was dreaming in English, which made us realise how valuable and effective this period was for language learning—more so than any method we had imagined.

Unlike the usual approach at Korean academies that matches English words to Korean meanings, Laura’s “learn English in English” coaching felt very new. Having words explained in English allowed the meanings to sink in almost sensorially.

While improvement in English was our basic goal, we also hoped for inner growth and broader horizons. That may have seemed ambitious for twelve weeks, but it proved entirely fitting: our daughter’s inner life has grown visibly. Above all, she has become a student who takes real delight in learning.

During the homestay, when people were curious about Korea, she shared stories about Korean culture and explained the history of the Korean War. She says this made her want to study history more deeply. She has returned with the aspiration to go beyond everyday conversation and to develop English strong enough for debates and academic presentations.

Going in the winter season was also a great blessing. Rolling in the snow and playing with friends, helping to clear snow, and feeling a sense of solidarity with peers in another country were all precious experiences. In Canada, Christmas is celebrated like a major holiday; our daughter felt truly welcomed, receiving many gifts—not only from Laura’s family but also from neighbours and church friends. Surrounded by the festive atmosphere throughout the city, she enjoyed a season that felt like a celebration, and she delighted in listening closely to the English lines during the children’s Christmas play at church.

When we met our daughter at the airport after her return, her face was astonishingly bright and cheerful. Even before she began sharing her stories, we could tell how joyful and happy her time had been. She had withdrawn from conventional school and started homeschooling, quietly wrestling with whether it had been the right choice. Through this Canadian homestay, that pent-up frustration seems to have been released. We are truly grateful to everyone who planned this homestay program, which allowed her to return not only with stronger English, but with many “gifts” in the form of experiences.

해당 기수 자녀들 가운데 가장 맏언니였음에도 불구하고, 아이를 혼자 타국에 보내는 일은 저희에게 모험이었고 솔직히 많은 걱정이 따르기도 했습니다. 그러나 털끝 하나 다치지 않고, 마음 아픈 일 하나 없이 12주간의 홈스테이를 잘 마치고 무사히 귀국하였습니다. 출국부터 귀국까지 아이를 붙드시고 인도해 주신 하나님께 깊이 감사드립니다.

출국 전, 오로라를 보게 해 달라는 작은 기도에도 응답해 주셔서 해당 지역 사람들도 흔히 보기 어렵다는 오로라를 직접 보는 은혜도 누렸습니다. 오로라에 대한 기대가 있었는데, 배정된 가정의 홈맘 이름이 ‘로라’라는 사실 또한 참으로 흥미롭게 느껴졌습니다. 사전에 강아지 털에 예민할 수 있다는 점을 미처 전달하지 못했음에도, 배정된 가정의 반려견이 알레르기 있는 사람들을 위해 개발된 품종이었다는 이야기를 들었을 때는 이 작은 부분까지도 세심하게 맞추신 하나님의 인도하심을 느끼지 않을 수 없었습니다.

사전에 보내주신 로라 가족의 사진만 보아도 화목이 넘치는 가정임을 알 수 있었는데, 타국에서 온 아이를 기쁨으로 맞아 주신 로라 가정의 넉넉한 마음과 배려에 깊은 감사와 큰 감동을 받았습니다. 한국에서 오는 아이를 위해 젓가락을 미리 준비하고, 한국 음식에 관한 정보를 파악했다는 이야기는 오래도록 마음에 남습니다. 홈파더가 때때로 원서로 『반지의 제왕』을 읽어 주었는데, 그 시간 또한 아이에게 매우 좋은 경험이 되었습니다.

로라 가정과 함께 웃고 즐기며 여행을 다니고, 교회 청소년 모임에도 참석하는 가운데 영어는 자연스럽게 늘 수밖에 없었습니다. 처음에는 하고 싶은 말이 한국어로 먼저 떠올라 머릿속에서 번역한 뒤 말을 했다면, 이제는 그 과정이 생략되어 영어가 먼저 떠오르고 바로 말로 인출된다고 합니다. 어느 순간 부터 대화 참여자가 아닌 입장에서 다른 사람들끼리 하는 대화가 다 들렸다는 것이 리스닝에 있어 참여로 큰 변화 였습니다. 꿈마저 영어로 꾼다는 이야기를 들으며, 이 시간이 언어 학습에 있어 얼마나 값지고 어떤 학습법보다 탁월한 과정이었는지 실감하게 되었습니다.

한국 학원에서 이루어지는 영어 단어와 한국어 단어를 매칭하는 방식과 달리, 홈맘 로라의 ‘영어는 영어로 배우는 학습 코칭’이 무척 신기하게 느껴졌다고 합니다. 영어 단어를 영어로 설명해 주니 단어가 감각적으로 스며드는 느낌이었다고 합니다. 

영어 실력 향상이 기본적인 목적이었지만, 아이의 내적 변화와 지경의 확장에 대한 기대 또한 있었습니다. 12주라는 기간에 비해 다소 큰 기대였을지도 모르지만, 그 기대는 충분히 합당했습니다. 아이의 내면은 눈에 띄게 성장했습니다. 무엇보다 학습에 대한 희열도가 높은 아이가 되었습니다.

홈스테이 과정 중 한국 문화에 대해 궁금해하는 이들에게 한국 이야기를 들려주고, 한국전쟁의 역사에 대해 설명하면서 역사 공부를 더 깊이 하고 싶어졌다고 합니다. 단순한 영어 회화를 넘어 토론이나 학술 발표까지도 영어로 소화할 수 있는 수준 높은 실력을 갖추고 싶다는 포부를 안고 돌아왔습니다.

겨울 시즌에 다녀온 것 또한 큰 은혜였습니다. 눈밭에서 뒹굴며 아이들과 함께 놀고, 눈을 치우며 타국의 아이들과 연대를 느끼는 시간도 소중했습니다. 캐나다에서는 크리스마스를 큰 명절처럼 보내는데, 로라 가족뿐 아니라 이웃과 교회 친구들로부터도 많은 선물을 받으며 진심으로 환영받고 있다는 느낌을 받았다고 합니다. 도시 곳곳에 가득한 크리스마스 분위기 속에서 축제 같은 시간을 누렸고, 교회 아이들의 성극을 보며 영어 대사에 귀를 쫑긋 기울이며 즐겁게 보았습니다.

귀국 후 공항에서 마주한 아이의 얼굴은 놀라울 만큼 환하고 밝아져 있었습니다. 그간의 이야기를 꺼내기 전부터 얼마나 기쁘고 즐거운 시간을 보냈는지 충분히 짐작할 수 있었습니다. 학교를 자퇴하고 홈스쿨링을 시작하며 옳은 선택이었는지 표현도 못 한 채 고민하고 마음 앓이 했을 아이의 답답함이 이번 캐나다 홈스테이를 통해 시원하게 뚫린 듯했습니다. 영어뿐 아니라 많은 선물 같은 경험을 안고 돌아오게 해 준 이 홈스테이 프로그램을 기획해 주신 모든 분들께 진심으로 감사드립니다.
